One-to-One Support

We can help!

Foundational Reading and Math Skill Building

In operation since 1991, the Centre for Literacy is a trusted provider of specialized instruction focussing on foundational reading, spelling, writing and math skills. All instruction is rooted in the Science of Reading and the Science of Math — current, proven bodies of research that inform teaching today.

Instruction is one-on-one and customized for each learner. Teachers are certified and trained.
Instruction is available to  children of varied abilities, including neurodivergent learners, using evidence-based methods to build confidence and academic success.

The Centre works with students of all ages. The target population for one-to-one remediation is students of which any one of the following apply:

Have been formally assessed as having a learning disorder/disability in reading, writing or mathematics

Are awaiting a full psycho-educational assessment and have been flagged by the school system as having persistent and consistent difficulties in reading, writing or mathematics

Are extremely reluctant writers, or have significant difficulties with the writing process

Are significantly underperforming in mathematics

Have not been flagged or identified by the school system as having difficulties, but whose parents are concerned about their child’s academic struggles, and if the student may be impacted by a learning disorder/disability

Are at risk for a learning disability/disorder because they have parents or siblings with a diagnosed learning disorder/disability, or because of speech-language difficulties as a preschooler

Only succeed in academic endeavours by expending a disproportionate amount of effort or receiving significant unusually high levels of support

Have difficulty with the mechanics of reading and/or reading comprehension but who have good oral comprehension.

The Centre assists students with multiple or complex needs

The primary focus of the Centre is to support students to overcome difficulties in reading or mathematics. Many of the students who attend the Centre may have conditions which frequently co-exist with learning disorders/disabilities, including:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Deficits in Executive Function
Apraxia
Tourette’s Syndrome
Anxiety Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorders
Intellectual Disabilities
, and various other neurodevelopmental issues.

We are happy to accommodate students with multiple needs. We are committed to working with families to provide support and build the most inclusive learning environment possible for each student.
