What are the critical things to know if your child has been diagnosed with a learning disorder/disablity (LD)? This is a question many parents ask after their child has been diagnosed with an LD. This practical session is designed to empower parents with basic information about LDs, how to help their child at home, and the ABC’s of advocacy.
The session is held over 2 consecutive evenings and will cover:
The Basics of Learning Disorders/Disabilities highighting what it is NOT, the conditions that may co-exist with LD’s, and what LD’s look like at various stages of a child’s life. Testing and its interpretation will also be discussed.
Intervention and helping your child at home will highlight what intervention looks like in the classroom and in one-on-one environments. The purpose and use of accomodations and supports will be outlined, along with how parents can actively support their child at home.
The ABC’s of advocacy will present startegies for advocating for a student with LD’s in a manner that builds the positive relationship with teachers and schools. Relevant legislation, including the Standards for Special Education and Supreme Court Decision in Special Education will be reviewed.
These session will be hosted by Kathryn Burke who is a parent of a son with autism, learning disabilities and other mental health issues. She is a veteran advocate and owner of the Centre for Literacy.
