Are you the parent of a child with a learning disorder or disability? What are the critical things you need to know? Consider attending the Centre for Literacy’s Parenting a Child with Learning Disabilities/Disorders information session. This course is held over three consecutive evenings. This practical session is designed to empower parents with basic information about LDs, how to help their child at home, and the ABC’s of advocacy.
The session is open to parents and other interested individuals in the community. A nominal fee of $30 for all three sessions has been set to defray expenses.
Monday: Learning Disorders/Disabilities – The Basics: The focus of the first evening is to provide basic information about LDs. This session will highlight what LD is and is not, the conditions that may co-exist with LDs, and what LDs look like at various stages of a child’s life. Testing and its interpretation will also be discussed.
Tuesday: Intervention and Helping Your Child at Home: This session will highlight how intervention looks in a classroom and in one-to-one environments. The purpose and use of accommodations and supports will be outlined, along with how parents can actively support their child at home.
Wednesday: The ABC’s of Advocacy: The session will present strategies for advocating for a student with LDs in a manner that builds positive relationships with teachers and schools. Relevant legislation, including the Standards for Special Education and the Supreme Court Decision on Special Education (Moore decision), will be reviewed.
