Structured Literacy is an approach to teaching reading by breaking the process down to foundational skills (decoding, spelling) and systematically moving the student through the foundational skills to higher-level literacy skills (reading comprehension, written expression).
Structured Literacy has proven to be an effective approach to teaching all students, including those who have dyslexia.
The Centre For Literacy follows a set progression provided by the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) to teach foundational literacy skills; and uses a Centre For Literacy developed program backed by the Science of Reading, a wide body of research on reading, to teach higher-level literacy skills.
Below, you will find an infographic developed by the International Dyslexia Association that highlights the elements of Structured Literacy.
