The Centre for Literacy is offering fun-filled learning boosts for students entering Grade 2 or Grade 3 in the fall of 2025. Each session will be one hour long and run for a series of 8 days (in-person)/10 days (online). The classes will have a maximum of eight children in attendance and will be led by two specially trained certified teachers. Students will be paired with a buddy throughout the sessions. All supplies will be provided.
Literacy Boosts will include a pre and post assessment. Students will build confidence, particularly with short vowels, for reading and spelling; will practice their new skills with various board games and group activities; and connect with new friends as they strengthen their literacy skills.
The Centre uses a structured approach to teaching literacy informed by the Science of Reading. Structured literacy involves intentionally leading a student through phonemic awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate sounds), phonics (connecting sounds to letters) and comprehension (understanding) in a sequence that builds a solid reading and spelling foundation. Structured literacy has proven to be very effective for teaching all students, including those with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.
For math, the Centre uses a specially designed math remediation progression that complements area school curriculum. Math Boosts will involve instruction and fun games/activities to reinforce foundational number sense so students can move forward to grade expectations. Students will gain confidence while filling gaps in their foundational math skills; practice their new skills with various board games and activities; and connect with new friends while strengthening their number sense skills.
