SUMMARY:Foundations in Reading Remediation: Part 1
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this session will be on the use of evidence based multi–sensory strategies (hearing\, seeing\, and feeling) to build phonological and phonemic awareness to support a student to gain understanding of sound-symbol connections (the alphabetic principle). Secure understanding of phonological processes is a critical prerequisite for reading competency. Difficulty with phonological processes is the most common reason students struggle with literacy. Support will be provided in how to plan and deliver initial remediation strategies. \nThis is a core class for Centre for Literacy Teachers. This course will be held over two consecutive Wednesdays. Part 1 of this session will be held on September 26th from 7 to 9pm. Part 2 will be held on October 3rd\, also from 7 to 9 pm.  Teachers\, educational assistants and other professionals in the community are invited to attend. Registration is $75 and can be taken over the phone at 780-434-3698.

SUMMARY:Tapping into the Power of Metacognitive Strategies to Enhance Reading Comprehension and Writing-Part 1
DESCRIPTION:This 2 part session is for teachers\, educational assistants or home schooling parents interested in learning practical strategies to help students simultaneously improve reading comprehension and be more enthusiastic about writing. This session provides practical strategies to learn more about how metacognition can enhance reading comprehension and writing. Metacognition provides a structured process for “thinking about thinking.” The National Reading Panel identifies metacognitive strategies as a critical best practice to enhance reading comprehension. Metacognitive strategies are also very powerful tools to support writing. This professional development session will be held over two consecutive Wednesdays (May 9th and 16th) from 7pm to 9pm. The PD will provide participants with an overview on how to use the metacognitive program\, Visualizing and Verbalizing\, to enhance reading comprehension and writing in classroom and one on one teaching environments. \nThe cost is $75 for both sessions. \nRegistration can be taken by phone at 780-434-3698.
