This is a question many parents ask after their child has been diagnosed with an LD. This practical session is designed to empower parents with basic information about LDs\, how to help their child at home\, and the ABC’s of advocacy. \nThe session is held over 2 consecutive evenings and will cover: \nThe Basics of Learning Disorders/Disabilities highighting what it is NOT\, the conditions that may co-exist with LD’s\, and what LD’s look like at various stages of a child’s life. Testing and its interpretation will also be discussed.\nIntervention and helping your child at home will highlight what intervention looks like in the classroom and in one-on-one environments. The purpose and use of accomodations and supports will be outlined\, along with how parents can actively support their child at home.\nThe ABC’s of advocacy will present startegies for advocating for a student with LD’s in a manner that builds the positive relationship with teachers and schools. Relevant legislation\, including the Standards for Special Education and Supreme Court Decision in Special Education will be reviewed. \nThese session will be hosted by Kathryn Burke who is a parent of a son with autism\, learning disabilities and other mental health issues. She is a veteran advocate and owner of the Centre for Literacy.

DESCRIPTION:Are you the parent of a child with a learning disorder or disability? What are the critical things you need to know? Consider attending the Centre for Literacy’s Parenting a Child with Learning Disabilities/Disorders information session. This practical session is designed to empower parents with basic information about LDs\, how to help their child at home\, and the ABC’s of advocacy. \nThe session is open to parents and other interested individuals in the community. A nominal fee of $30 for all three sessions has been set to defray expenses. Items to be addressed include: \nLearning Disorders/Disabilities – The Basics: Basic information about LDs will be provided. This part of the session will highlight what LDs are and are not\, the conditions that may co-exist with LDs\, and what LDs look like at various stages of a child’s life. Testing and its interpretation will also be discussed. \nIntervention and Helping Your Child at Home: This part of the session will highlight how intervention looks in a classroom and in one-to-one environments. The purpose and use of accommodations and supports will be outlined\, along with how parents can actively support their child at home. \nThe ABC’s of Advocacy: The component will present strategies for advocating for a student with LDs in a manner that builds positive relationships with teachers and schools. Relevant legislation\, including the Standards for Special Education and the Supreme Court Decision on Special Education (Moore decision)\, will be reviewed. \nThis one day session is equivalent in content to the class that is held periodically on three separate evenings. \nThere will be a lunch break\, but lunch will not be provided. \nRegistration can be taken over the phone at 780-434-3698.

SUMMARY:Board Games Night for Adults on the Autism Spectrum
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Centre for Literacy\, with the kind support of the Larry and Janet Anderson Philanthropies\, is delighted to host Board Games Night.  Held every second Thursday\, it provides an opportunity for adults or older teens on the autism spectrum to get together and play a variety of board games. A formal diagnosis of autism is not necessary to participate. \nGames at Games Night range from Role Playing Games to traditional board games. Participants get to decide. \nThere is no charge to participate\, but registration is necessary. We do this to ensure so that we can best address the needs and interests of participants. If you are interested\, contact the Centre for Literacy at 780-434-3698 or email us at info@centre4literacy.com. Jaime\, the Recreation Therapist who coordinated Games Night\, will be in contact with you to set up a brief telephone call. \nThe Centre is also contributing with the Faculty of Social Work of the University of Calgary to conduct a research project on recreation needs and social connectedness amongst individuals with autism. All participants will be invited to be part of the research study. However\, agreement to be part of the research study is totally voluntary; individuals are welcome to attend even if they do not wish to participate in the study. \nThe Centre is a friendly venue for people with mobility issues. There is plenty of free parking at our site\, and designated disabled parking stalls. Companions are welcome to attend. \nGames Night will be held every second Thursday. Here is a list of dates for future evenings for 2018: \n\nMay 3\, 17 & 31\nJune 14 & 28\nJuly 12 & 26\nAugust 9 & 23\nSeptember 6 & 20\nOctober 4 & 18\nNovember 1\, 15 & 29\nDecember 13.
