SUMMARY:Foundations in Reading Remediation: Part 1
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this session will be on the use of evidence based multi–sensory strategies (hearing\, seeing\, and feeling) to build phonological and phonemic awareness to support a student to gain understanding of sound-symbol connections (the alphabetic principle). Secure understanding of phonological processes is a critical prerequisite for reading competency. Difficulty with phonological processes is the most common reason students struggle with literacy. Support will be provided in how to plan and deliver initial remediation strategies. \nThis is a core class for Centre for Literacy Teachers. This course will be held over two consecutive Wednesdays. Part 1 of this session will be held on September 26th from 7 to 9pm. Part 2 will be held on October 3rd\, also from 7 to 9 pm.  Teachers\, educational assistants and other professionals in the community are invited to attend. Registration is $75 and can be taken over the phone at 780-434-3698.

SUMMARY:Parenting a Child with a Learning Disability/Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Are you the parent of a child with a learning disorder or disability? What are the critical things you need to know? Consider attending the Centre for Literacy’s Parenting a Child with Learning Disabilities/Disorders information session. This practical session is designed to empower parents with basic information about LDs\, how to help their child at home\, and the ABC’s of advocacy. \nThe session is open to parents and other interested individuals in the community. A nominal fee of $30 for all three sessions has been set to defray expenses. Items to be addressed include: \nLearning Disorders/Disabilities – The Basics: Basic information about LDs will be provided. This part of the session will highlight what LDs are and are not\, the conditions that may co-exist with LDs\, and what LDs look like at various stages of a child’s life. Testing and its interpretation will also be discussed. \nIntervention and Helping Your Child at Home: This part of the session will highlight how intervention looks in a classroom and in one-to-one environments. The purpose and use of accommodations and supports will be outlined\, along with how parents can actively support their child at home. \nThe ABC’s of Advocacy: The component will present strategies for advocating for a student with LDs in a manner that builds positive relationships with teachers and schools. Relevant legislation\, including the Standards for Special Education and the Supreme Court Decision on Special Education (Moore decision)\, will be reviewed. \nThis one day session is equivalent in content to the class that is held periodically on three separate evenings. \nThere will be a lunch break\, but lunch will not be provided. \nRegistration can be taken over the phone at 780-434-3698.
